身元保証書What is it?
A formal document in which a Japanese national or permanent resident (the guarantor) vouches for a foreign national's character, financial stability, and compliance with Japanese law.
When is it needed?
- Permanent residency application — required when applying via the standard route
Where to Obtain
Your Guarantor (Personal Contact)
The guarantor fills in the official form and submits it as part of your application package.
Guarantor eligibility:
- Japanese national or holder of permanent residence
- Must have a genuine personal relationship with the applicant (family, colleague, friend)
- Must use the Immigration Bureau's official form (身元保証書)
- Must affix their personal seal (認印 or 実印) or handwritten signature
